Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
