The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
